Today we are talking about those rough chapped hands that many of us are experiencing right now.

Even if you were an avid hand washer leading into this current season of life, chances are that you are washing your hands even more frequently than before.  All of this hand washing is great to rid ourselves of potentially harmful germs, but the downside is the loss of moisture.  When our skin starts to lose that much needed moisture to stay healthy, it starts to breaks down.  This is when we start to experience roughness that can quickly snowball into cracks and breaks within the skin.  So how do we take care of our skin, once it has started to breakdown?

The first idea that many have, is to not wash our hands as frequently, and I can honestly not recommend that as an option right now.  Keep washing your hands, as frequently as you need to during the day.  We are going to focus on the best time to heal our skin, which is overnight.  Our cellular structure reproduces much quicker overnight when our body is at rest than at any other time.  So let’s use that time to get the best possible outcome.

Now that we know what time is best, let’s take a quick look at a few different products that can really aid in the healing process.  For today’s segment, Brandie Showcased 4 different products that have worked for her.  Each of them has a different set of benefits and heals different skin concerns.

  1. Corn Huskers Lotion.  This has been around for decades.  It has a cool feel and a very slick viscosity.  The liquidy texture absorbs quickly into the skin, and that Maes it nice for applying multiple layers. Purchase on Amazon
  2. Aquaphor. Aquaphor literally uses the marketing of healing rough and cracked skin.  This product has a vaseline like texture and is very slow to absorb, but is incredibly effective.  Purchase on Amazon
  3. Capri Blue Hand Cream.  This product,  like many other hand creams on the market, is a basic daily driver hand cream.  The benefit to this type of product is availability.  Many of us have this type of lotion on hand.  Purchase on Anthropologie
  4. Coconut Oil.  Coconut Oil and other cooking oils (think olive oil, avocado oil) are great because they absorb well into the skin, and most of us have some sort of cooking oil on hand. Purchase on Costco

The key is to use what you have on hand!   No matter what you have on hand right now, it is better than waiting a week to have something shipped.

Apply the skin product of your choice liberally,  then use a pair of cotton gloves over your hands to hold in the moisture.  You will want to use cotton, due to the breathability of the fabric.  You may have a pair of manicure gloves lying around, or you could break out your lightweight Winter gloves.  I use this variety

Depending on how dry your skin has become, it may take more than one night to completely heal your hands.  Give it time to work, and remember this key piece of advice.  Start using hand cream after every 1-3 hand washings during the day.  This will help you keep the healing process going around the clock!
